The Suviana basin

The lake is part of the “regional park of the lakes Suviana and Brasimone” and is an artificial lake created by a dam created at the beginning of the 20th century.

It is located on the Bolognese Apennines, between Pistoia and Bologna. The shores of the lake bathe four municipalities: Suviana, Bargi, Badi and Stagno.

The dam was produced to power the hydroelectric power station which had the function of producing energy for the Florence-Bologna railway line and is located between the Suviana basin and the nearby Pavana basin.

At the end of the 70s another power plant was installed that connects the Brasimone basin to the Suviana basin which has the curious double function of pumping water in both directions: from the Brasimone basin to the Suviana basin for electricity and when inverted , from the Suviana basin to the Brasimone basin to restore the image and avoid switching off the electric electric pumps of the national network.

The lake is popular especially in summer, when tourists and people seek refreshment on its banks. The services offered by commercial and non-commercial activities are many: hotels, barbecue area, camping, canoeing, wind-surfing …

The area is also frequented by numerous motorcyclists traveling among the wonderful Tuscan-Emilian hills.

Nearby, you are offered by other relaxation services. Spend a day at the renowned thermal baths of Porretta.
